Digital Inkjet Printing Emerges as Mainstream Global Packaging Solution, Equipment Makers Speed Up Product Iteration

Digital inkjet printing has evolved from a niche option to the mainstream production technology for global packaging, with leading equipment manufacturers rolling out upgraded high-speed eco-friendly models amid surging market demand this week.
Smithers industry research reveals global orders for paper-based digital inkjet packaging presses jumped 37% year-on-year, fueled by the EU’s PPWR packaging waste rules and volatile plastic raw material prices. Supply chain disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz pushed up polyethylene costs, pushing food, cosmetics and FMCG brands to shift mass orders from plastic laminates to recyclable paper packaging, where inkjet technology delivers unmatched flexibility for small-batch, customized printing.
SCREEN showcased its flagship Truepress PAC 520P unit at Interpack 2026, a water-based inkjet press hitting 80 meters per minute for paper flexible packaging. Free of printing plates, the machine cuts setup waste and supports variable data printing, with its food-safe water inks fully compliant with European circular packaging standards. Canon also sealed bulk orders with five Indian label converters this week, supplying digital lines for personalized beauty and pharmaceutical packaging.
Equipment suppliers across Japan, Europe and China are accelerating R&D iteration. Domestic makers including IECHO rolled out integrated inkjet-printing die-cutting all-in-one units targeting Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian packaging factories, drawing heavy inquiries at Saudi Print & Pack 2026.
Analysts predict the digital packaging inkjet market will maintain a 10.9% annual growth rate through 2030. Converters prioritize upgrading digital production lines to slash compliance costs, shorten lead times and adapt to the global paper-for-plastic substitution wave.
